THE race for the Express chairmanship has started taking shape with a life member Sam Kiwanuka announcing his candidature.

Kiwanuka an accountant, is the first known candidate for the soccer club’s first elections in seven years.

The incumbent Godfrey Kirumira, who took over the mass following side in 1998, is yet to announce his bid.

Elections are the top item at the club’s assembly due at Mutesa 11 stadium, Wankulukuku on December 4.

Kiwanuka said if elected, his priority would be to re-establish systems at the club.

“In this club, many people know what I stand for, that is clean leadership and regular consultation,” Kiwanuka said.

“I consulted widely and made a decision to stand, I will work to restore the club to its former glory.”

Club secretary Kavuma Kabenge, who declared he is not standing, said he had not got a word from Kiwanuka.

“But every eligible member is free to stand, what is important is the club has to move forward,” Kabenge said.

Kiwanuka, a former vice chairman and secretary, would be following in the footsteps of his late brother Mugambe Kiwanuka, chairman in the 1980s.

Their father, the late Jolly Joe Kiwanuka, was one of the founder members and later chairman of the club over 40 years ago.

Last month, a leadership crisis threatened the club’s survival after city tycoon Kirumira resigned following accusations by fans of non performance.

Crisis meetings of the club trustees and fans early this month led to the assembly being fixed.

Kirumira bounced back to organise the assembly after separate meetings of the club trustees and fans put to rest the leadership chaos.
