UGANDA unanimously won the right to host the 2006 CECAFA Al Amoudi challenge Cup here on Saturday.

Announcing the decision in the CECAFA congress at FERWAFA headquarters, council boss Denis Obua said: “There are a lot of problems in Uganda but they should be in position to have this since everything will be catered for.”

Ethiopian tycoon Sheikh Al Amoudi committed to donate funds for the event until next year. Uganda will consequently be handed US$100,000 to organise the championship.

“I hope they start designing ways to make the event a success,” Obua added.

Sudan, who were zealous lobbying through their president Asbili Shadat to host Africa’s oldest competition, were rewarded with the Kagame club championship.

SC Villa, the defending champions will represent Uganda alongside Police while Ethiopia has St. George, Zanzibar (Police), Sudan (El Hilal, El Merriekh), Rwanda (APR), Tanzania (Yanga) and Kenya (Ulinzi).

Burundi president, CECAFA region’s first FA woman boss Lydia Nsekera won her country the right to host the 2006 U-20 youth championship in August.
The women and U-17 youth championship hosts will be decided in a congress that will be held in Cairo in January.

Tanzania accepted to host the 2007 CECAFA challenge cup while the U-20 event will move to Eritrea.

The assembly, meanwhile, disqualified Kenya from the championship and fined them US$2000 (sh3.6m) after the team refused to travel to Kigali without allowances.

CECAFA general secretary Nicholas Musonye, who labelled Kenya’s failure to honour its invitation as a ‘sabotage and shame’ said: “Kenya is out and they should not bother coming because we have changed the fixtures. We have also fined them US$2000 because they have disappointed our sponsor.”

In the redesigned fixtures, Kenya’s opponents Tanzania and Burundi were placed in group A alongside Rwanda, Zanzibar and Eritrea while Sudan were then thrown in group B alongside Ethiopia, Uganda, Somalia and Djibouti.
