THE Government has invested sh2b in setting up a Jua Kali exhibition centre, a trade and industry ministry official has said.

Cankwo Okulo, the principal industrial officer in the ministry’s department of industry and technology, said the Government had also waived taxes on goods and services of all domestic and foreign exhibitors expected.

“Jua Kali contributes 20% to Uganda’s gross domestic product annually. By opening up an exhibition centre, we shall be promoting the informal sector which employs most people in the tourism and manufacturing sectors,” he said.

The centre dubbed “Jua Kali village,” will stand on a 10-acre piece of land in Luzira, a Kampala suburb, and will host the next East African Jua Kali exhibition.

Okulo was addressing a press conference about the seventh East African Jua Kali exhibition at the Uganda Manufacturers Association show grounds in Kampala on Sunday.

Abdallah Makange, the project manager, said the exhibition under the theme, “Jua Kali: Vehicle for sustainable regional industrialisation and development,” would attract 450 exhibitors.

He said 200 exhibitors were expected from Uganda, 100 from Kenya, 100 from Tanzania and 50 from Rwanda.

“This is the biggest Jua Kali exhibition since its inception in 1999,” Okulo said.
