Am I wasting time studying?
Dear Doctor, I am HIV positive and very poor. Should I waste the little money I may get to continue studying? Appolo

Dear Appolo,
Oh yes! You may have time on earth as long as those not infected! It may take between three to 15 years for the immune system to be affected by the virus. During this time, the person is normal. He can do everything like any person who is negative. After the immune cells are worn out, the person may start falling sick and we say that he has AIDS. The illnesses can be treated, so the person can work, study and be like one who does not have the virus, though he may fall ill more often. There are drugs for HIV available now. They do not cure, but control the virus and its effects on the body. They are called Antiretroviral drugs (ARVs). They are very effective, and if you take them regularly as recommended, your life can be extended indefinitely. You will study, work, and achieve everything else, just like any other person who does not have the virus. So, Appolo, you need to get in touch with a doctor. Organisations like TASO will help you to understand more about this.
