NOMINATION papers for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to run for the 2006 presidential elections were yesterday picked from the Electoral Commission (EC), setting the stage for poll battle.

Carrying the authorising letter signed by the chairperson of the NRM electoral commission, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, NRM electoral commissioner Zam Zam Nagujja and the president’s private secretary for political affairs, David Mafabi, picked the papers at about midday.

“This is to request you to give the presidential nomination forms for the 2006 elections of the above named NRM candidate (Museveni) to Hajati Zam Zam Nagujja Kasujja, a commissioner in this office,” the letter read.

It also asked the EC to schedule and reserve the nomination of Mr. Kaguta Museveni Yoweri for December 15, 2005 at 2:00pm.

Kasujja and Mafabi were received by the principal elections officer, Charles Lubwama, who had them sign for the papers.

“Let us hope that this time you will not delay. Last time, you delayed us at the last minute,” Lubwama said.

Meanwhile, the NRM EC has sent out letters to its chairpersons of all the 69 districts, urging them to sign for the nomination of Museveni as a presidential candidate.

It has also sent nomination forms to its members who are registered voters to sign for Museveni’s nomination.

NRM spokesperson Ofwono Opondo on Sunday said, “We shall request for December 15, the last day of nomination, as the nomination day for President Yoweri Museveni.”

“We expect that nomination forms sent out today for signing will be returned by Friday next week.

Although the law requires 100 people to sign, we expect that our people will work around the clock to ensure as many people sign for Museveni. It will be in all districts,” Ofwono said.

He said the Museveni’s nomination would be witnessed by MPs, LC5 candidates for NRM and other observers. “We shall invite many observers who wish NRM well,” he said.

He said Museveni would address a public rally after nomination. He said they were yet to decide on the venue.
