LATE arrival of voting materials for the NRM elections held yesterday delayed the polls at several stations in and around Kampala.

In some areas, elections are expected to continue today.
Voting in some parishes started at 1:00pm and others like in Buikwe North as late as 4:00pm, yet in most polling stations, voters began arriving at 8:00am.

The party was electing candidates for nine offices in the districts, including its parliamentary candidates, district councillors, woman and youth councillors and councillors for people with disability and the elderly. Two people, male and female, were elected for each of the last three offices.

In Kapchorwa, a returning officer was arrested and the exercise suspended amid allegations of malpractices.

Provisional results trickling in by press time yesterday indicated that Mary Mugenyi was leading President Museveni’s brother Nzeire in all the sub-counties in Nyabushozi, while John Nasasira was leading in Kazo.

In Mbale Municipality, where rival supporters clenched fists and called each other names, area MP Wanjusi Wasieba was trailing former Masindi RDC Hassan Wasswa Galiwango in three parishes.

In Bufumbo sub-county, Mbale, the results for Bumandanda parish were nullified after supporters of two rival candidates clashed.
In Soroti county, former NRC member Ateker Ejalu was leading in three parishes in Asuret.

In Iganga town council and Kigulamo sub-county, Bageya was trailing Busoga University Guild President Milton Muwumba.

In Nakawa, Kampala, incumbent Fred Ruhindi was in the lead. In Rubaga North, incumbent MP Tom Kayongo won, while in Kampala Central, incumbent MP Francis Babu won.

NRM spokesperson Ofwono Opondo said that on Tuesday they had focussed on delivering materials upcountry. He said the materials for Kampala and neighbouring districts like Mukono, Wakiso and Mpigi were distributed on the polling day to ensure that they are not tampered with.

“Given that Kampala has got two returning officers and that the distribution could have started at about 9:00am, it’s not strange that voting at some stations took off late,” he said.

In Nyenga, Buikwe north, voters were seen strolling around the whole day. Mukono district movement returning officer Kiviri Makumbi said voting would continue today.

At Kitante Primary School, voting started at 1:30pm. The delay caused panic and disruption when the voters demanded that the ballots be counted before voting could start, the returning officer, James Kakooza, said.

By 1:00pm, voting had not started at Makerere University Business School in Nakawa division because most of the election materials had not been delivered.

An agent for one of the MP aspirants said the returning officer had gone for lunch and left his telephone contact written on the ballot box.

Other polling stations where materials arrived late included Naguru I and Naguru II parishes, Pentecostal (Airport) area in Nakawa, Mengo Primary School, Kitante Primary School, Shimon Demonstration School and Lugazi town council.

MPs who went through unopposed included the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi (Bukoto central), Maurice Kagimu (Bukomansimbi), Sam Kutesa (Mawogola), Capt. David Matovu (Kooki), Tim Lwanga (Kyamuswa) and Ruth Nvumetta Kavuma (Kalangala).

At Naguru I, one of the four contestants for Nakawa MP seat, Ainebyoona Vicks Kingo cried foul when his name was left out on the ballot paper.
