5 ministers, 20 MPs trounced in NRM polls

AT least five ministers, including Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, and over 20 MPs have been trounced in the just-concluded NRM elections for selecting its candidates in the coming parliamentary elections.

AT least five ministers, including Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, and over 20 MPs have been trounced in the just-concluded NRM elections for selecting its candidates in the coming parliamentary elections.

Several former ministers and MPs, including Kirunda Kivejinja and Anthony Kanyike, bounced back after a lull in politics.

In some parishes, elections were still going on yesterday due to late delivery of voting materials. In Adjumani and Pader, the elections were postponed to December 21.

Provisional results indicated that Kagonyera, Minister for General Duties, Office of the Prime Minister, lost to Mary Paula Turyahikayo while Dr. Kezimbira Miyingo was beaten by Isaac Ssejjoba. Prof. Semakula Kiwanuka, state minister for investments, was trailing Godfrey Kiwanda and Gordon Ssematiko in Mityana north.

In Buyanja, Matiya Kasaija beat state minister for lands Baguma Isoke. The Minister of State for Local Government, Philip Byaruhanga, lost to Erisa Kaahwa. The Minister of State for Higher Education, Simon Mayende, was also beaten by Gabriel Opio, NRM spokesperson Ofwono Opondo said.
Mayende had earlier said he had pulled out to stand as an independent.
Reports from Hoima said Henry Kajura, Bugahya MP and 2nd Deputy Prime Minister, was running neck and neck with Kiiza Rwebembera.

In Katikamu, incumbent MP James Kinobe lost to former Kampala City Council engineer Abraham Byandaala.
Bugabula North MP Moses Kizige, the parliamentary Movement Caucus chairman, who vigorously rooted for the Movement during the Constitution amendment process and Bukoto West MP Mulindwa Birimumaaso, were also humiliated at the polls. Kizige was defeated by Simon Gerald Menya, formerly of Plan International.

Kagonyera, Kinobe and Kizige conceded defeat and are not contemplating running as independents, Opondo said.

MP Herbert Nuwagaba (Kajara) was defeated by new entrant Stephen Tashobya.

Mbale Municipality MP Wanjusi Wasieba, seen as the party favourite, was floored by Hassan Galiwango, while Budiope MP Paul Lubowa was trailing Henry Balikoowa.

In Koboko, James Baba was leading area MP Ahmed Awongo with a slim margin, less results from one parish.

Henry Mutebi Kityo, MP for Mawokota South, lost to John Seguya Lubyayi. Former MP Tom Kazibwe Musisi defeated MP Kefa Sempangi for the Ntenjeru south seat. Anthony William Kanyike made a comeback when he beat MP Eron Nantume for the Buikwe west seat.

Lydia Balemezi lost to Onyango Kakoba in Buikwe north. Rwampara MP Amon Muzoora and Kigulu north MP Francis Mukama did not survive either. Mukama lost to Edward Baliddawa Kafuufu. Other losers were Kasirivu Atwooki (Bugangaizi), Dan Kiwalabye (Kiboga east), Malinga Johnson (Kapelebyong)
Former minister Kirunda Kivenjinja bounced back in Bugweri county.

Other winners included Kibirige Sebunya (Kyandondo north), Matovu Byatike (Entebbe Municipality), Bakaluba Mukasa (Mukono north), Janat Mukwaya (Mukono south), Sarah Nyombi (Ntenjeru north), Khiddu Makubuya (Katikamu south), Peter Mutuluza (Mawokota north), Freda Nanziri (Busiro south), Lubega Kaddunabbi (Butambala), Kabakumba Masiko (Bujenje), Urban Tibemanya (Kashari) and Bakoko Bakoru (Ayivu).
