Former legislator Ateker Ejalu (above) has described his landslide victory in the Soroti county NRM primary election as a public demand by the people of Soroti to get proper and credible representation in Parliament, reports Nathan Etengu.
Ejalu garnered 3,854 votes against his lone and absentee opponent, Peter Ojur, who got only 284 votes. Ojur is reported to be attending a leadership course in Ghana.
Ejalu said he could have scored more votes if voters at Opuyo parish did not stay away on suspicion that they were being duped to participate in an election for a position that had already been declared unopposed.
He said voters in Gweri parish also stayed away after the polling station was shifted from the parish to the sub-county headquarters at short notice.
“If all these anomalies had not occurred, I could have won with over 97%,†Ejalu said in a telephone interview on Thursday.
He said it was due to public demand that he returned to mainstream political activities.
Ejalu said some of the sub-counties considered as strongholds of his political opponents voted highly in his favour.
Ejalu lost to Charles Okula during the CA elections before again losing to Col. William Omaria for Parliament in 1996. In 2001, Sam Anyolo won.
