THE National Resistance Movement (nrm) has released the provisional results of the primaries for directly elected MPs.

The NRM electoral commission chairperson, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, said, “The election was very successful. The people of Uganda have spoken and decided. 99% of the country has elected its leaders.”

“Apart from a few isolated incidents or cases of irregularities, the elections were well conducted and attended,” said Rugunda, flanked by NRM electoral commissioners Israel Kayonde and Muzamil Kibedi and NRM spokesperson Ofwono Opondo.

“This is the first time a political party in Uganda has held such a comprehensive election from the grassroots in record time with such incredible success.”

On electoral irregularities, he said, “We have cancelled elections in Tingey (Kapchorwa) until Monday because election materials were not handled properly by the returning officer. But we warn the parties in Kapchorwa and elsewhere that the Movement will not compromise on serious matters like security, electoral fairness and democracy.”

“The phenomenon of ‘godfatherism’ did not feature in this election.

Neither President Museveni, nor the NRM vice-chairperson or other Movement leader had special candidates. All the candidates belong to the Movement family.

“If you are defeated, it does not mean you are not good at all. It depends on what the voters need.

Look at Ndugu Kivejinja’s case. The polls have brought in young, middle-aged and elderly faces. Many of those who were not elected may be deployed elsewhere.”

Rugunda said the late arrival of electoral materials was in most cases done delibarately to allow voters to see that they were not tampered with.
