Roy Kapale! What kind of name is this?
It is a family name. My grandmother gave it to me when I was young and I couldn’t object.

Who composes your songs?

I compose them myself. I think about life and personal experiences and write them down.

What did you use to lure Rebecca?

Our love grew with time as we worked together with Diamond Production. I needed nothing to lure her.

What would make you slap her?
I think if she disrespected me in public, I would slap her. However, at the moment, I don’t expect to slap her. And I don’t expect her to do such a thing.

How much did you spend on dates?

I don’t remember, but I used to take babes out and buy drinks, although I am not a spendthrift.

How did you get involved with your fiancee?

We both worked with the Diamond Production Band where we became good friends. She was my stage partner and she would act well. I must say we matched most times and that is how our love developed.

Some men have been ‘detoothed’. How much have you lost in ‘detoothing’?

It is good to date someone you really love, not dating for lust. Fortunately, I have never been detoothed, although I know that many girls are liars. They cannot tell you that they already have boyfriends and many are so demanding that they are difficult to satisfy. Today, it is difficult to find a girl who offers true love.

Is Rebecca like that?

Nooo. She is exceptional.

How would you react to a man who found you at a dinner and tried to befriend your girlfriend, ignoring you completely?
I would feel bad, but keep quiet until they finish their business. When the man leaves, I would turn to my girl and demand an explanation.

What is the maximum penalty you would suggest for adulterous men and women?
If I got you with my wife, you have to take her for good and then pay all the money I have spent on her, including hospital bills.

Would you be comfortable with a woman who works night shifts?
I wouldn’t be comfortable. I need time with her at night. Secondly, I don’t trust women who work at night. Sometimes they are tempted by circumstances, which is dangerous.

What do you do in your free time?
I go to church. I normally go to KPC. Though I am not yet saved, I like fellowshipping with friends.

Would you spend a night at a labour ward for your fiancee’s sake?
Yeah! I think that is the best moment to show your wife that you love her. Otherwise, how else would you prove it?

People seem to have known you recently, but you have been around for a while. What has made you popular today?
Basically, my first song Mukyala Neighbour was popular and when I made the video, it became more popular. I recently released Ebitaala Bintadde, which was nominated for the best band single at the PAM Awards. Because of those hits, I was invited to perform during the USA Convention in October. When I returned, I was invited to perform in Denmark, Germany, Belgium and Sweden.

How do you feel about the Ugandan music industry?<.b>
Ugandan music has gained strength. Many new artistes and good studios are now in place and the market is expanding. However, there is too much piracy. We need a copyright law.

What do you think people have to go through to get where they want?
One thing you have to do is to be focused. Secondly, you have to be ambitious and take music as a job. You need to be serious with what you are doing, and you have to be patient and competitive with no hatred.

What is the best thing about being a music star?
One of them is free publicity. You become popular and you get privileges from the society.

Where do Ugandan artistes get their inspiration?
We get inspiration from old singers — both local and international. I was inspired by Mesach Semakula and Jose Chameleone because of their prolific music production.
