THE health ministry wants a ban on adverts and sponsorship by the tobacco industry.
The principal medical officer in the ministry’s mental health department, Dr. Sheila Ndyanabangyi, on Friday said a proposal seeking ratification of tobacco control had been forwarded to the Cabinet.
She said the move followed a concern among health experts that the tobacco industry, through its publicity programmes, had created a lot of controversy in relation to people’s health.
“From the adverts and sponsorship of certain programmes, smoking is depicted as a good and attractive thing to do. Yet it is actually bad, with millions of people dying of tobacco-related diseases,†she said.
Ndyanabangyi was presiding over the opening of the 14th annual scientific conference and the 4th Dr. Matthew Lukwiya memorial Lecture at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
The two events were organised by the Uganda National Association of Community and Occupational Health.
