JOURNALISTS in Kampala will today deliver a petition to the Speaker of Parliament over what they called an infringement of media freedom by state minister for information Dr. James Nsaba Buturo.
The journalists made the resolution after a media conference organised by Human Rights Network for Journalists (HRNJ) at the Kampala Regency Hotel, Bakuli, on Thursday.
Buturo banned media debate on charges against jailed Forum for Democratic Change president Dr. Kizza Besigye.
“It’s our right as journalists that is being exploited. We need to stand up and advocate for our rights. Let’s join hands and promote media freedom and free expression as we deliver our petition to the Speaker on Monday,” said HRNJ coordinator Wokulira Ssebagala.
The journalists condemned the Government for infringing on the media freedom and violating the freedom of expression.
Foundation for Human Rights Initiative executive director Livingstone ssewanyana urged the journalists to unite with a common voice.
He said, “The Buturo guidelines are not only illegal but provocative. Buturo is incompetent on such matters. His acts are horrendous. In the defence of freedom, we must organise and not agonise.”
