VIOLENCE among NRM supporters of the two contenders for the Kaliro constituency MP seat in Nawaikoke sub-county on Thursday left six people arrested and nine nursing serious injuries at Namugongo hospital in Kaliro town.
Edward Ochieng, the returning officer, said results from Nawaikoke had been withheld because of alleged malpractice by both aspirants, the incumbent Wambuzi Gagawala and Kenneth Lubogo.
“We have not yet declared the results officially because of the Nawaikoke standoff. There are investigations to carry out and consultations to be made,” Ochieng told journalists on Friday.
Lubogo said the violence had been brought about by the returning officer working together with the LC5 chairman, Elijah Kagoda and Wambuzi for their selfish interests.
“It’s true Ochieng, Kagoda and Wambuzi were involved in electoral malpractice that has fuelled this violence. They have even changed some polling stations from the gazetted areas to local politicians’ homes,” Lubogo said.
Meanwhile, there was drama when Ochieng tried to flee using a back entrance after the press found him and Wambuzi meeting in Kagoda’s office.
Lubogo’s supporters, who had surrounded the office, forced him into a saloon car and drove him back to the NRM offices on main street in Kaliro town.
