HUNDREDS of mourners from all sectors of life hailed former Cranes and SC Villa striker Majid ‘Tyson’ Musisi for bringing pride to his nation.
Musisi 38 (right) died on Tuesday night in Kampala after a long illness.
He is considered to have been the best number 9 this country produced. Musisi in 1992 became the first Ugandan to make it into the professional ranks in Europe.
Tears flowed as several fans recalled Musisi’s great moments at his burial ceremony at Salama near Munyonyo in Kampala yesterday.
Hundreds of condolence messages from football associations, individuals, clubs, companies and local government leaders were read out to relatives and friends that braved the scorching sun.
Among the fans who attended was Commander of UPDF Land Forces, Lt.General Katumba Wamala who described Musisi as a patriot who did his country proud.
“Musisi was great player who has never been matched by the current generation of footballers. I urge the youth here to excel in whatever they do,” he told mourners.
The Katikiro of Buganda Joseph Mulwanyamuli Ssemogerere said Musisi was a great international soccer star that brought honour to Uganda and Buganda Kingdom.
“We were shocked by the sad news of Majid’s death. The kingdom and the country will miss him,” Ssemogerere said in a speech read by Buganda Sports minister Herbert Semakula.
His two children who live in the United States of America with their mother could not make it for burial but sent messages.
“Daddy we will miss you so much. We will meet in heaven. May your soul rest in peace,” was the message from Abed Mutyaba, one of Musisi’s sons.
