Mr. Right won’t care who my father is

Dec 16, 2005

Angella Katatumba, 26, was mentioned by the press as one of the Uganda’s most eligible women and a tabloid purported she was a virgin. She flew into Kampala from Chicago last year and took the city by storm. She sung a duet (Sikyetaga) with Bebe Cool; she has joined our local artistes with vengean

Some sections of the press alleged you are a virgin. Is it true?
I do not know where they get such stuff, but I choose to reserve that answer.

How does it feel like being the daughter of one of the rich men in Uganda?
Laughs. First of all, I’m very proud of my father’s achievements. He is a honourable, disciplined, hardworking, honest, fair, caring and loving father. So, to be a daughter of such a man to me is an honour for which I thank God everyday. But I’m even grateful to my mom for her guidance.

Does that in any way affect the choices of men you make?
No. It only affects my lifestyle because I have to watch the way I carry myself and the way I present myself on stage while singing and the way I dress.

Are men afraid of you because of your family background?
Oh, yeah! I think they may be afraid to approach me, but I believe that the right man is going to approach me regardless of whose daughter I am.

You have been both in US and Uganda. Is there no man that has followed you at all?
I reserve that answer.

What would you consider for Mr. Right?
He has to be respectable, hardworking, understanding, caring and have a wonderful sense of humour.

Would you marry a peasant?
The Lord has His plans, so we, as mere mortals, cannot change His plans. I believe in the Lord’s guidance and whatever choices He makes for me.

What don’t you like about men?
I don’t like their lies. I hate liars and unprincipled men. I don’t like people who don’t do what they say. My parents brought me in a very disciplined manner where it’s not an option not to do what you said you would do.

How does it feel to be single?
Right now I don’t feel like it is a problem. I know there are many women who feel insecure when they are single but I take it as a chance to get my work done, run around with my music. I take it as an opportunity to build my foundation and learn more about myself.

Can you sum up your life?
I went to Katatumba academy for my primary school studies. I went to Canada for my high school studies and england for university studies, where I studied Economics and Law and then masters in Human Resource, before working in Chicago.

What song sums up your life?
One moment in time by Whitney Houston.

Which song then makes you shed off fatigue?
Any of my songs do. When I’m stressed, I go to my room , lie down, switch on any of my songs and calm down.

Which song that reminds you of your first crush?
All at once by Whitney Houston.

What is your motto in life?
If I put 100% effort and do the best I can in whatever I do, God willing I will succeed.

Would you love to be as glamourous as international divas?
I could be like them if I continue with determination and not lose focus of my goals.

What do you do when you are with your parents watching a movie and a rude bit comes on?
My mother will switch off immediately. She doesn’t play.

What was it like to work with Bebe Cool on Sikyetaga?
The song was difficult for me to sing in Luganda, but Bebe Cool was patient and made it a funfair experience.

How important are pants in your life?
I grew up with seven boys and I am the only girl. so, I have that male influence. In short, I’m stuck with trousers.

Do you fancy any of our local artistes?
I’m proud of our artistes. Ten years ago you could not hear local music on radios, but the fact that they have brought our music to the forefront and have made Ugandans appreciate our music is fantastic. I’m grateful to Jose Chameleone, Bebe cool, Juliana Kanyomozi, Bobi Wine, Buchaman and others for that accomplishment.

Have you ever walked through the city centre? How did goons react?
Fortunately, they seem to like me, they shout Angella, Angella and then chorus Sikyetaga.

Who are your pals?
I have more acquaintances because tight relationships tend to bring you down. You get involved in gossiping, useless chitchat and there is also a chance of big fights, which cause a lot of negativity.

What is your favourite perfume?
I use Giorgio Armani and the flavour is Armani Mania.

What is the most you have splashed on a pair of shoes?
I once bought Dolce and Gabana shoes at $450. That was in Chicago.

How much do spend on your hair?
It depends on where you are, in Chicago I spend $300 every after six weeks, but here it is cheaper; sh280,000 is enough after every six weeks.

Do you have any regrets in life?
God planned everything that happens in my life. So, I don’t have any regrets at all.
