By Flavia Nakagwa Universities in Uganda should re-invent themselves in order to meet the many challenges brought about by globalisation, state minister for higher education Simon Mayende has said.
“Universities should share knowledge and know how to cross boarders and continents with a lot of competence and skill,” he said.
Mayende said this on Thursday at the third graduation ceremony where 36 students completed masters degrees in Advanced Nursing Studies at Aga Khan University.
He said there was an urgent need to scale up the availability of competent human resources, adding that opportunities were to be made for healthcare workers to develop professionally.
He commended Aga Khan University for assisting the Government to meet a multitude of social, health and development challenges facing the country.
The president of Aga Khan University, Shamsh Kassim-Lakha, said the health sector was to be boosted by the doubling of the numbers of highly qualified nurses in Uganda.
Kassim-Lakha said the advanced nursing studies programme was introduced in Uganda to reduce the problem of brain drain, especially in the medical field.
