<b>Fire in Pabbo</b><br>GULU — Over 168 families were left homeless in Pabbo IDP camp after a fire outbreak yesterday. A total of 237 huts have been burnt since December 13.

GULU — Over 168 families were left homeless in Pabbo IDP camp after a fire outbreak yesterday. A total of 237 huts have been burnt since December 13. Witnesses said the fire broke out at around 9:00am from a hut in Zone FB sub-ward II and spread rapidly to sub-ward II, III, and V. The camp chief, Wilson John Ojok, said, “We are not sure of the exact causes but it’s believed that the fire starts miraculously.”

Couples told
KAMPALA — President Yoweri Museveni has appealed to married couples to uphold African traditions, saying they provide a comprehensive constitution in marriage. He said this at the wedding ceremony of Joseph mag-ezi and Cathy muwonge at Kampala Sheraton Hotel on Saturday.

Moyo gets
MOYO — President Yoweri Museveni has donated a maize grinding mill and cattle to rural women in Obongi county. The mill with a hauler, the first of its kind in West Nile, was on Saturday handed over by Lawrence Kabwama from the President’s office.

Sign language
SIGN language should be promoted in order to achieve equality, protect and promote the rights of deaf people, the Swedish Ambassador, Erik Aberg, has said.
He said this at the first show for Uganda Deaf Silent Theatre at the National Theatre in Kampala on Thursday. He said the constitution provides for the promotion of sign language.

Govt advised
THE Government must ensure that the ground is levelled to benefit all presidential candidates, a senior human rights activist has said.

Lukumu bitter
BULISA County candidate Fred Lukumu, who lost in the NRM primaries, has said he will stand as an independent candidate if the NRM electoral commission does not intervene to solve the election malpractices, reports Patrick Jaramogi.
Lukumu (above), who lost to Stephen Biraawa, visited The New Vision offices on Saturday, saying there was massive rigging; intimidation and buying of voters.

Mafabi for FDC
The Forum for democratic Change recently elected the interdicted acting Mbarara chief magistrate, Richard Mafabi, to vie for the Sironko LC5 seat.
Mafabi, 40, will tussle it out with the NRM’s Kabale Wambi, who trounced the incumbent district chairman in the primaries.

Officer irked
MOST Ugandans are still ignorant of their constitutional rights, an Electoral Commission (EC) officer has said.
Molly Kamukama, the head of voter education and training department, said more civic and voter education was needed.
She urged the political parties to help the EC in promoting their supporters’ democratic rights and knowledge of the law.

Chief blames
UNPLANNED settlements in urban areas have hindered development, a commissioner in the works ministry has said.
Shibuta Mabala said on Tuesday 71% of housing establishments in urban areas were temporary and could not last three years.

New policy
THE health ministry is to formulate guidelines to regulate the operation of traditional healers, the principal medical officer at the mental health department said on Thursday.
Speaking at a scientific conference in Kampala, Dr. Sheila Ndyanabangyi said there had been “a lot of mistrust on the alternative care given by traditional healers.”

Activist asks
THE Government should ensure that children living with HIV/AIDS are not discriminated and stigmatised in school, an AIDS activist, Agnes Nyamayarwo, appealed on Wednesday.
