JINJA golfer Herman Mutawe ended seven years of waiting for a union title by winning the Arua Open on Sunday.

Mutawe, playing off handicap 2, carded 151 at the season closing Uganda Golf Union (UGU) stroke play event in Arua.

“Eight years without a major title is a long time and I am happy to be champion,” Mutawe said.

But the winner and his rivals had to contend with a dry, fast par-70 course, a condition caused by the long dry spell in the region.

Mutawe, who took up golf in 1998, made a low-key start firing 79 before he shot 72 in the decisive round to win.

Arua’s Rajab Piwang finished second at 152, beating former national champion and Jinja player Stephen Birungi on countback.

The new national champion Stephen Kasaija, who has enjoyed a wonderful season, this time faltered, mainly let down by a putting problem.

Kasaija won seven of the 14 UGU events while the other seven were shared by his rivals including latest winner Mutawe.

At the same time, Maj Gen. Fred Oketcho carded 70 nett to take one of the awards at the Seniors Open. Action was at the Uganda Golf Club (UGC) course, Kitante on Sunday.

The annual event is for UGC members who are above 55 years.
