MUKWANO Agro-Project is to spend over sh7.8b this season to buy harvests of the new sunflower (PAN-7351), cotton seeds and simsim (sesim-2) in Lango districts.

Mukwano Agro-Project is under AK Oils and Fats Ltd, a subsidiary of Mukwano Group of Companies. The season started in November and will end in February.

The project’s extension services manager, Chowdry Chalichama, said sh2.8b would buy the sunflower from Lira, Apac, Masindi and Sironko districts.
Chalichama said sh1b would be used to buy 1,000 tonnes of simsim in the above districts, while sh4b would be paid to cotton ginners in Lira and Apac.

Addressing reporters at Mukwano’s sunflower store in Lira town last week, he said the 1,000 tonnes of simsim harvested are from six tonnes of seeds distributed this year, which were planted for export only.

Chalichama said, “As the local and regional markets widen, AK Oils needs to increase output. This is why Mukwano is investing in sunflower production and purchase of cotton. However, we also target developing farmers in these areas.”

He said the 8,000 tonnes of sunflower would increase the company’s cooking oil production by 30%.

“Last season we bought 5,000 tonnes of sunflower at sh1.75b from 8,300 farmers in the four districts. This season, over 8,000 tonnes worth sh2.8b are to be purchased from 20,000 farmers,” Chalichama said.

He said the purchases would be a big boost to AK Oils cooking oil production.
