MPs Reagan Okumu and Michael Nyeko Ocula have told the High Court that the murder charge against them is a concoction and that the prosecution evidence is a pack of lies aimed at undermining their political credibility.
They denied ever participating in killing Alfred Bongomin, the Movement chairman for Pabbo sub-county in Gulu, leave alone holding any meeting to plan his murder.
They have been indicted together with a Gulu resident, Steven Otim Olanya, for murdering Bongomin on February 12, 2002.
Through their lawyers, Sam Njuba, Alli Gabe and Opaar Donge, the MPs told the trial judge, John Bosco Katutsi, that they would call witnesses to prove that they never participated in the alleged meeting that purportedly discussed plans to murder all the Movement chairpersons in Gulu district.
Okumu, 36, said the case was brought against him because he is a super star in Gulu politics.
“The Movement people are after me because I have defeated them several times and I am determined to continue defeating them in the political field where I am a good player,” Okumu said, causing laughter in court.
He denied that he knew Bongomin.
