MAYOR Ssebaana Kizito’s deputy Hasib Takuba has refused to step down for Al-Haji Nasser Sebaggala for the post of Kampala mayor.
Takuba was nominated first for the post yesterday at Kampala City Council chambers at 1:45pm, in spite of a letter submitted by the Democratic Party secretary general, Prof. Ebil, to the returning officer, endorsing Sebaggala as the party candidate.
The letter, dated December 29, was copied to the chairman Electoral Commission, Sebaggala and Kampala district returning officer and Town Clerk James Sseggane.
Takuba (left), accompanied by his wife Madina Kabuye and mother Hajjat Sinage Takuba, said, “I cannot step down for Sebaggala who has failed in the presidential race. I was the first to declare my intention to contest for the post when Ssebaana was elected the party presidential candidate. We must go by the party slogan of Truth and Justice.
“The party constitution does not say that any political failure has to be integrated into the system without going through the right procedure. I went through the primaries and the district endorsed me. Section 69 (e) of the DP constitution states that the district has a right to endorse a candidate and not the party headquarters,” he said.
Takuba, who had booked 4:30pm as his nomination time, re-scheduled to 1:45pm to ensure he is nominated before Sebaggala.
