THE army has warned against politicising the issue of decongesting or dismantling the internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, when there are still remnants of the LRA rebels in the bush.
“The decongestion or dismantling of the IDP camps will not be a stampede programme but rather a well organised gradual departure from the camps. We shall start by reducing the size of the bigger camps by creating settlements in the villages with enough security,” the army commander of the land forces, Lt. Gen. Katumba Wamala, said on Wednesday.
Katumba and the UPDF 4th Division commander, Brig. Nathan Mugisha, who were talking on Radio Mega FM, said the army and the other stakeholders would find modified ways of handling children who trek from their villages to spend nights the town for fear of rebel attacks.
“We shall have these night commuting children at division levels with enough security to stop them from flocking into the town,” Katumba said.
Mugisha said they had started de-congesting the camps, adding that the created smaller camps include Corner Agula and Adak in Omoro county, Atto hills and Omyel Apyem in Aswa county, Corner Nwoya and Langol in Nwoya, Otong and Jeng-Gari in Kilak county.
He said they would continue to reduce the sizes of the camps and eventually take people back to their homes.
Katumba warned IDPs against touching objects they are not sure of, saying they could be some landmines.
