FOR a while now Ugandans have been used to the fact that Sheraton Hotel, Kampala is the ultimate destination on New Year’s Day. But it has been more about the spectacular fireworks display than the music.

For the past few years, No End Entertainment whetted our appetites for music entertainment at the Sheraton Hotel as a preamble to the much-awaited fireworks.

This year, the mantle has been passed on to Big Time Entertainment, a local promotions company.
They are organising what they have dubbed “the biggest end of year party ever in Uganda” under the codename ‘The Grand Extravaganza’. The extravaganza is due tomorrow at the Sheraton Hotel.

On the line of performing artistes are Kenyan artistes Red San, the Longombas and Kleptomaniax.
Together with these will be a line-up of young Ugandan artistes ranging from Peter Miles, José Chameleone, Ngoni (of the digi fame), Sweet Kid, Kid Fox, Kombat Dancers, KS Alpha, Benon and Vamposs, Bebe Cool to Priscilla Kalibbala.

Nominated as ‘Best African Act’ at the 2005 MTV Europe Music Awards in Lisbon, Portugal in November 2005, Kleptomaniax consists of Nyashinki, Munkiri and D.E.P., three young Kenyans.

The group’s first album, M4E (Maniax 4Ever), was launched in April 2005 and aptly showcased the trio’s contemporary urban style, which marries hip-hop, R&B, dance, salsa and a bit of everything in an entertaining, thought-provoking and stylish album debut, producing the smash hit single Swing - one of the most played tracks on radio in East Africa.

The talented trio made Kenyan music history by being the first Kenyan artistes to release a song while still in school, and two members are still in full-time university education.

Kleptomaniax’s debut single, Freak It, released in 2002, was a huge hit and promised great things to come.
Their follow-up single Maniax Anthem, released in 2003, further affirmed and cemented their position and potential in the market, receiving massive radio airplay.

Their third single Haree, released in 2003, was a lyrical journey around the party scene, was very highly received in all circles and affirmed their reign as one of the finest musical groups in Kenya, while Tuendelee, their fourth single, lays claim to being one of Kenya’s most influential and best received songs.

Red San on the other hand has been described as Kenya’s Jose Chameleone.
He has been to Uganda countless times, performing especially at street bashes.
He is known for smash hits such as Nakutaka and Who’s The Chicken Now?
According to Hakeem Saga, one of the promoters, “There will be massive fireworks marking the entry of 2006. We also have guaranteed adequate security and secure parking for cars at the venue.”

The show will set revellers back by sh10,000 if they come before 5:00pm and sh15,000 if they come in after 9:00pm.

Saga says tickets will only be sold at the gates. Gates open at 5:00pm.
This event is sponsored by Capital FM, Beat FM, The New Vision and Rinsar Motel.
