What are they?
Camels are huge humped-backed animals that live in deserts. They are two types of camel – The Arabian camel with one hump and the Bactrian camel with two humps. The Arabian camel is found in most Arab countries, while the Bactiran camel is found in South Asia.

How big are they?
A fully grown camel can grow up to 7 feet tall and weighs from 1,200 to 2,000 pounds. Camels can live up to 40 years. They may be black, gray, brown, tan or white.

Are they useful?
Yes! Camels are the most important animals in the Arabian deserts. They are used to carry heavy loads and to transport people. They are also used to plough and to work at water pumps.
Camels supply milk and meat. Their hide is turned into leather, and the hair used to make ropes, rugs, tents and coats.
The camel’s teeth are shaped into bracelets, necklaces, rings and ornaments. Camel dung is dried and used as fuel to light fires.

How does it survive the desert?
The camel’s body is made in such a way that it uses as little water as possible to survive. Although it is a warm blooded animal the camel is able to lower its body temperature, so that it sweats very little and loses less water.
The camel hump is a storehouse of fat and muscle that helps keep it alive during times when food is scarce. The camel’s long thick eyelashes protect it from the sun’s glare and from dust. Its slit nostrils can be closed for short periods during sandstorms.
