These Bird Sare A Nuisance In Kampala

SIR — I hope the local authorities will soon wake up to the problem of scavenger birds in Kampala.

SIR — I hope the local authorities will soon wake up to the problem of scavenger birds in Kampala. The marabou storks first appeared in Uganda after the Liberation War of 1979 feeding on dead bodies. Now they are all over the place living off rubbish heaps and perching on our beautiful trees and buildings. They raise their young ones in the trees in the city centre while their excreta wafts through the air which we breathe in.
These birds not only contaminate the air but also our buildings, sidewalks, you name it. By the way are these birds of any benefit to us? If they are, then no one has told us about it.
All we know is that garbage in Kampala is recycled by these birds and if we were to analyse the contents of our garbage then one gets a clearer idea of what we are being subjected to. Imagine, if it were human beings perched on these trees doing what these birds are doing! it would not be acceptable.
If we cannot take it from fellow human beings why should we take it from birds?
We understood an attempt was made by the city authorities to rid us of this vermin but were prevented by an outcry from tourists who said these birds are beautiful.
