DESPITE the demand for more judges in the judiciary, the justice and constitutional affairs minister, Janat Mukwaya, on Friday said the ministry had no funds to facilitate them.

“Last year, I promised to tackle the issue of increasing the number of judges to meet the increasing number of cases in the courts. As a first step, parliament last year passed a resolution increasing the number of judges of the High Court by 19.

“However, the financial requirements in terms of pay and facilitation can not allow us to recruit all the 19 judges at once. Our target is to have five judges recruited before the end of this financial year,” Mukwaya said.

She said this at the opening of the 10th Law Year at the High Court Grounds.
Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki, was the chief guest.
