MASAKA –– Facilitators of environmental journalism and communication course from the department of mass communication at Makerere University have asked private farmers to emulate a farmer in Masaka who has planted 35,000 trees. John Mary Kanyamurwa, the course administrator, recently guided a nationally selected team of 24 environmental journalists.

Eucalyptus pest
BUSIA –– Eucalyptus trees are under massive attack by a damaging pest that spreads through the leaves of the fast-growing and profitable tree.
Ouma Anthony, assistant forestry officer, says the pest was first sighted in Buteba sub-county in the northern side of the district at St. Cosmus tree planting project.

Minister urges
RUKUNGIRI–– State minister for environment, Jeje Odongo, has urged primary school headteachers to use pupils to plant trees if the environment is to be protected. Odongo said the pupils should plant a tree each every term. This was during the launch of the tree-planting week in Rukungiri recently.
