THE Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS) has secured adequate gadgets to ensure safety of tourists climbing cliffs in the Rwenzori Mountains.
“We are expecting more than 300 tourists from all over the world this dry season and we are now prepared to ensure their safety,†the RMS director, James Mbahimba, told The New Vision recently at his office in Kasese town.
Mbahimba said the organisation, the only one that enjoys mandate to run tourism activities in the mountains, was keen to avoid a repeat of last year’s incident when a South African tourist was trapped in the mountains.
“We have intensified our efforts to ensure safety of the tourists, their escorts and guides by strengthening our rescue system,†he said.
Mbahimba said 88 tourists trekked the mountains last December, saying they were expecting more tourists this season.
Earlier, LC5 chairperson Yokasi Bihande had told a council meeting that the district benefited a lot from tourism.
