UGANDA has reassured the Arab world that it still supports the settling of the Palestine question through peaceful means.

The assurance was given when the acting foreign minister and state minister for international relations, Tom Butime, met a group of Arab ambassadors at his office in Kampala, a statement released from the ministry said.

The meeting took place on Tuesday. The envoys led by the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, ambassador Abdallah Bujeldian of Libya, also included Hadjem Belaid of Algeria, Maasoum Marzonk of Egypt, Surajuddin Hamid of the Sudan and Abdul Wahed Al-Arefy of Saudi Arabia.

The statement said they discussed issues of mutual concern and recent developments on the international arena especially the progress of the peace process in the Middle East.

Butime assured the ambassadors of Uganda’s unwavering support for the settlement of the Palestine question, through peaceful means.

The envoys hailed the historical bond that links Uganda and the Arab world and pledged to work hard to strengthen the existing relations between Uganda and their respective countries.

Last month Butime said Uganda still supported Palestine despite opposing two United Nations resolutions condemning Israel.
On December 4 the UN took its annual vote on seven resolutions concerning Israel.

Eight countries including Uganda and the US voted against and 155 voted for the resolution on Jerusalem, declaring that Israeli actions to impose laws, jurisdiction and administration on the holy city were “illegal and therefore null and void and have no validity whatsoever.”

The resolution criticised governments that set up diplomatic missions in Jerusalem and called for international actions to guarantee freedom of religion and access by all people and nationalities to the holy city.
