Last Friday, there was a steady stream of 4x4 wheel drive cars that sneaked their way up to Lwantama, Kakiri, the country home of Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya who threw a graduation party for his daughter, Georgina Nabukenya Bukenya. Georgina graduated with a Master's degree in Law from Warwick University in the United Kingdom.

Beaming, a proud Bukenya told his guests that, “I don't normally cerebrate degrees of this nature, because to me they are normal small things, but when Georgina said she wanted to go for further studies, I could only afford her tuition, and she offered to work for her own upkeep. She has managed well.” He went on to say, “You people work hard to achieve success, and I want these children to see and learn from you. My generation should be the last one that does not belong to the middle class.”

The emotion was thick in Bukenya’s voice as he told us how much the achievement meant to him. And that joy was more evident in Georgina’s voice when she addressed the crowd. Flanked by her brothers Richard Bukenya, an engineer based in the United States and Roy, a fourth year medical student at Mabrara University, she thanked her parents for support and encouragement.

The small and carefully selected crowd – city tycoons Sudhir Ruparellia, Charles Mbiire, Gordon Wavamunno, Godfrey Kirumira, Minister Sam Kuteesa, Barbara Mulwana, Judy Rugasira, lawyer Edwin Karugire amongst others applauded all through the cocktail, dinner and dance afterwards.
