A strong young adolescent liked and loved by parents and friends, studying hard to be professional, beautiful and healthy, and in a stable relationship.
But something seems to be wrong. You are pregnant. Your wonderful life, future and dreams come tumbling down like a ton of bricks.
Your brain is working overtime searching for a solution. The thought of braving nine months of pregnancy is a nightmare. Meanwhile, you cannot imagine your parents’ reaction and your boyfriend has deserted you.
A once sweet time of pleasure has turned sour. Your lover and friends have become ‘counsellors’ and ‘doctors’ advising you to carry out an abortion. Is this good advice?
So you decide to revoke the nine months tenancy agreement of the baby in your womb. But is abortion is the right choice?
Abortion serious and must not be used as a family planning method or taken lightly. It involves two lives, the mother and baby.
If you are pregnant, seek counsel and do not do anything stupid like inserting a hanger into the uterus. Sex always comes with huge risks and responsibilities. Pregnancy is just one of them. Abortion may seem a great solution but it has health, social and psychological implications.

Health implications:
  • You may experience continuous bleeding especially if done by 'quarks' (inexperienced people). This could lead to anaemia, weakness, and may cause death.
Bacterial infections of the uterus could lead to infertility (inability to have children) or a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the womb).
    Social Implications:
  • Her family and the community treat a girl who has had an abortion like a social outcast.
  • Friends may desert because you will be seen as a bad influence on them.
  • You might be expelled from school should the administration find out.
    Psychological implications:
  • Post abortion guilt may set in affecting academic performance, as you will not be able to concentrate in class.
  • You may isolate yourself at school because you feel that you no longer fit in that community.

What to do if you've had an abortion:
  • Seek God’s forgiveness. He loves you and will forgive and comfort you.
  • Seek counselling and guidance from an adult you trust. This can be a doctor, teacher, relative, friend or elder of integrity. There are health centres at every sub-county where you can go for counselling and medical advice if you have not already done so. Naguru Teenage Centre also offers counselling and medical services.
  • Forgive yourself. Leave the past and move on with your life. Be more cautious next time and if possible, abstain from sex.
  • Become a peer counsellor for your friends, schoolmates and young people in the community.
  • Build a firm relationship with your parents and allow them to advise and guide you whenever necessary.
  • You have a second chance. Concentrate on your studies and a bright future. You are still valuable. Take charge of your life, be in control and make the right choices.
