    A’ level: Geog p2501 Physical Geography: Topic: Mass wasting or movement and its effect on people:

    Fred Nangoli in The New Vision of Monday, January 26, 2004 has captured the deadly rocks in Mbale over the slope of Mt. Wanale, one of the several ranges of Mt Elgon. Read the story carefully and use it to reflect on the impact of mass wasting on man.

  • Equip yourself with an atlas and find

    i) The location, height (altitude)of Mts Elgon and Wanale.
    ii) The location of Mbale and the road to Wanale.

  • State the dimensions of the rock outcrop mentioned in the story. What is its estimated weight?

    “There is evidence of rock parts breaking off and peeling off without human impact.”

  • Explain the causes of rock weathering.

  • Explain the reasons that have led the rock to show signs of falling or rolling down.

    From your knowledge of mass wasting;

  • What type of mass wasting is the Wanale dangerous rock in?

  • Explain other types of mass wasting.

  • From the story list and explain the likely dangers or impact of landslides and mass movement on the socio-economic activities of people in Mbale and other areas in Uganda.

  • What rocks constitute Wanale Mt? Examine the impact of anyone volcanic Mt on the human activities.

    A’ level: Photograph interpretation:
    Study the photograph accompanying Fred Nangoli’s story on Mbale’s deadly rock and do the following.

  • Draw a photo sketch and on it mark and name
