Kabaka Ronald Mutebi has appointed the new Ssabbalangira (clans leader), Moses Kayima, as the spokesman of the Buganda royals.

“There must not be any Buganda prince or princess to claim to speak on behalf of the royals. I have given the authority to the new Ssabalangira Kayima and you must respect him and me,” Mutebi said.

The Kabaka also directed Kayima to screen all members of the Abalangira clan to eliminate impostors.

Mutebi made the remarks yesterday at Mengo palace while installing Kayima as the 14th Ssabalangira. Dr. Kayima, 61, a mechanical engineer, has just retired as a lecturer at Makerere University. He is the fourth Ssabalangira from the lineage of Ssekabaka Kikulwe.

The Kabaka clarified that Buganda has only one Ssabalangira and appealed to the royals to respect and obey him.

He said non-royals initiated into the royal clan through emikago (alliances) must remain in their original clans and not claim to be members of the royal family.

On December 6, some royals under the Prince Kimbugwe Foundation announced their support for a third presidential term, claiming to speak on behalf of the royals. Prince Kimbugwe and his group did not attend.

The Kabaka cautioned royals to respect all jobs and urged them to take on leadership posts and to always be exemplary.

He said the main challenges facing Kayima were to unite the royals, screen out fake ones and streamline the process of giving of royal names.

Kayima, who replaces Besweri Mulondo, regretted that there were only 20,000 royals in Buganda and vowed to ensure that the number increased.
