MASINDI district has suspended eight head teachers for allegedly failing to account for sh19m Universal Primary Education (UPE) funds last year.

The acting district education officer, Francis Kyomuhendo, handed over the suspension letters to the head teachers during a head teachers meeting at Masindi Public Primary School last week.

“This is to inform you that you have been suspended from duty till you have produced proper accountability for the UPE funds failure to do as directed, Government will have no option but to prosecute you.

“You are not expected to report on duty at the beginning of the term as the education office has already directed your deputies to take over all your duties,” read the letter in part.

Addressing over 200 participants, Kyomuhendo said 22 others had been transferred.

He said the affected head teachers would not get their January salary till they gave full accountability.

A source told The New Vision that the district education department had tagged head teachers’ salaries on the accountability of UPE funds and other monies.
