THE Uganda Air Cargo Corporation (UACC’s) Hercules C-130 plane which has been grounded at Entebbe Airport since November 1999, was finally flown out of the country yesterday.

The 28-year-old aircraft, Reg.No.5X-UCF, has been flown to South Africa where it will under go mandatory servicing known in aviation terms as ‘C-check’.

It took off from Entebbe at 8 a.m for the six-hour flight to Johannesburg.

In September 1975, the then President, Idi Amin, bought the plane at about $18m. An American company, Lockheed Martins Corporation, were its manufacturers.

UACC, a state-owned company under the defence ministry, has contracted a South African company, Denel Aviation, to service it.

UACC general manager, Fred Kyankya, said the repairs are expected to take six weeks.
“The cost of putting the plane back in air will be between $1.5m to $2m,’’ Kyankya told The New Vision.
