Apart from Sudhir and Jyotsna Ruparelia celebrating 27 years of marriage last Saturday, it had also been Jyotsna’s birthday a few days earlier. And her age? Well women are usually coy about their age but all we do know is that she is a good considerable number of years younger than her husband, Sudhir.

The setting for the double party could not have been more serene –– on board the Ruparelia’s newly built 72-seater yatch –– Sundowner. It cast off at 6:00pm to set sail into the vast expanse of Lake Victoria and on board were what Jyotsna and Sudhir termed as ‘good family friends.’ Those friends included Kampala Casino boss, Bob Kabonero, Ministry of Finance Permanent Secretary, Chris Kassami, Azim Tharani, Jitu Parmer, Namita Agarwal, Darshana, Sam Patel, Narn Taker, Kwame Ruyondo, Julianne Rwakakoko, Godfrey Kirumira and Susan Jeppsson amongst others.
Half an hour into the cruise and the celebrations began in earnest with the cutting of a massive joint birthday/anniversary cake.

It was not possible to light the candles as Jyotsna would have liked due to the winds but what the heck –– there was an ample supply of sparklers to go round.

The food and beverages were specially selected for the celebrations –– a constant supply of pink champagne, wines, spirits, beers and of course enough high calibre cigars to keep the men happy after dinner.

Throughout the cruise, there was a steady supply of food that was simply flattering and enough to get the ladies to ask out how many more calories would they have put on by the time the cruise ended.

Then the dancing started. Jyotsna took to the dance floor first and showed she not only still has the dance strokes in her but that she can dance for hours on end if the situation required it. And for once, Sudhir took a back seat and was seen clapping from the touchline as his birthday girl, surrounded by her ‘bridge club,’ took centre stage.

When Sundowner eventually docked back at Speke Resort Marina late into the night, it was not the end of the party. There was a part two at Speke Resort Munyonyo’s poolside though it was tamer than the one on the boat.

Here people lazily sat back probably trying to digest the food and cake they had on the yatch while engrossing themselves conversation until the wee hours of the morning.

But it was more than just a party.

Those who I have already mentioned were on board including other guests –– Patricia Ssentongo, Poddi Kassami, Leela Somaia, Neil Bahner, Dr. Dorcas Kiwanuka, Jacquie Sabiiti of Sheraton Hotel and others will remember it was not just a party but, a mega celebration at that!
