Valentines Day is a day for lovers. Have you ever heard about it before?
On this day, many people exchange gifts to show love for one another.

There are many stories about how Valentine started. Some people say it started with St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred (killed) for refusing to give up Christianity. He was killed on February 14, 269 AD. It is said that St. Valentine left a farewell note to the jailer’s daughter who used to secretly visit him in prison. At the end of the letter he wrote, “from your Valentine”. Since then, people started exchanging love messages in remembrance of St Valentine. In Uganda, Valentine was first celebrated in the early 1990s. And today, many adults will wear clothes with valentine colours of black and red.

We do not have to dress up like them or buy expensive gifts to show our relatives or friends that we love them. We can show that we love them in many different ways because Valentines Day is not only for adults.
Children can show love to their sisters, brothers, parents, guardians and good friends.
Whereas adults have money to go out shopping, we shall make do with the little that we can. It does not have to be a nicely wrapped gift. You can help mummy and daddy with work at home and then make sure you tell them how very special they are to you. That can be the greatest Valentines gift from you to them.

Surprise them by making them a card, give them a glass of cold juice after a hard day or better still, help to prepare breakfast.
Why not pay a little bit more attention to them during meal times today.
Oh yes, go a step further, ask mummy to buy candles and make your family dinner a candle lit affair.
Ask mummy or the maid to help out here but give directions because this is your day to make your family feel loved. If possible put some nice flowers on the table and lay out beautiful plates on the table then serve the food.

Yes, even if it is posho and beans, serve it out beautifully with love. Sow a little bit of love in the family, it will make a big difference
Boys, since Valentine is on a weekend, help daddy to clean his car or better still do some work at home like slashing and sweeping the compound.
Remember to draw your parents a card with the words that say you care about them. If you have saved some money, then buy your parents a gift. Some of us never get round to telling our parents that we love them and really care about them.

Let us make it a day of love. It is said that if we show a little love to everyone, the world will be a better place. That is why everyday should be a Valentines day.
