EVERY Friday, Club Obliggato hosts the Chido-Star Explosion band. However, today it is going to be different since the group will be launching its CD, Bana ya Congo (Lingala, Children of Congo). The audience should therefore brace itself for a night of Soukouss, Rumba, Zouk and Reggae. Action will begin at 9:00pm. Betty Mpologoma and Jean Paul Samputu will be the guest artistes.
The album Bana ya Congo has eight hits. The bandleader, Chido Makelele composed all the songs. Chido, a Congolese by origin is a multi-talented artiste both on stage and in the studio. He plays the rhythm/bass guitar, keyboard, percussion and drums. He is also a gifted singer. He has played with many musicians from the Great Lakes region.
The tracks on the album are Sebene (Ndobolo instrumental), Kende -Kende (Lingala, go away), Bana ya Congo (Lingala, a call on the Congolese to reconcile and end the senseless wars), Tolingana (Lingala for love one another), Safari (Swahili Love song), Bibi (Swahili, the happiness of having a wife) and Nionso Ezali Natina(Lingala, the need for individuals to value their talents).
The songs are played in Slow Funky, Congolese Rumba and Raggae. They are spiced by the magnetic voices of Clauvis-Kiku, Baking de Arthur, Saraa, Ibrahim and Alidjo. The CD has been produced with the support of Alliance Francaise and the French Embassy in Uganda. It was recorded at Kasiwukira and BK studios.
Chido-Star group was founded in Rwanda in 1993 under the name Eva Star, which signifies “unity among friends.” However, owing to the effects of the genocide in 1994, the group collapsed but later, arose as the Explosion band with a variety of music from Congo, Zouk, Reggae, Blues, RnB and Soukouss.
