BUNYORO kingdom is facing a financial crisis, Omukama Solomon Gafabusa Iguru has said.

“We are in a terrible crisis. We cannot afford to do anything and the Government has not delievered what it promised us,” Iguru said in an interview with The New Vision recently.

He said he was living on the little money collected from houses which the kingdom owns and hand-outs from well wishers.

Iguru said the Government had promised that the kingdom could retain 50% of the proceeds from forests and game parks but the forestry and game park authorities had since ignored the promise.

He said the forests in Kibaale and Masindi had been cut down and he could not do anything about the timber dealers because his authority was limited.

Iguru said his subjects expected a lot from him but he could not help them as he wished.

Yolamu Nsamba, the Omukama’s private secretary, said Government programmes were failing because it had underrated the kingdoms.

He called upon the Government to use the cultural leaders in effecting its programmes.

The kingdom is currently organising the empango celebrations (the anniversary of the kingdom) for which it needs sh240m, although it is not clear where the money will come from.
