A Nissan Patrol vehicle hired by a BBC crew was destroyed when it hit a landmine on the Lira-Okwang road on Wednesday. A soldier died and the Ugandan driver was seriously injured, the army has said, reports Emmy Allio.

The two journalists had travelled in the vehicle from Lira to Okwang. They were flown back to Lira by an army helicopter.

The incident happened 80km north of Lira town.

According to a presidential assistant in charge of the press, Onapito Ekomoloit, whose vehicle escaped the blast, said the journalists had gone to Okwang in Otuke county to interview President Yoweri Museveni.

“This was the most vivid evidence to the media that the LRA is a terrorist organisation targeting soft targets,” he said. He said the destroyed vehicle was one of the seven travelling in a convoy from Okwang. “Five vehicles had passed and then the sixth hit the mine,’’ he said.
