THE El DIABLO band based in La Reunion (an Island in the Indian Ocean) is set for a musical tour in Uganda.

The group will perform at Kampala’s Club Obligatto today at 9:00 pm. They will also perform at Kakyeka Stadium in Mbarara, on February 29, at 7:00pm.
Chido-Star Explosion band and the Blood Brothers Reggae band will both be guest artists on both shows.

El Diablo is made up of of six young percussionists and one vocalist and have performed in many countries worldwide. A remarkable feature of this group is that their music is purely acoustic and they use only traditional instruments.

The group began in 1998 with David Payet a vocalist and his friend Jean-Hugues, a conga player/singer. They later teamed up with Bruno Celstin (Roulerman/big African Drum), Pascal Marianna (Big bass), Cedric Hermette (Piker/long drum), Jonathan Clain (Tambourin/small drum) and Olivier Courteau (Djembe/an African drum), to form the group Improvise, which played traditional Reunion music.

Unfortunately, they could not compete with the other groups back home. Disappointed but not defeated, they took on a new style called raggayola, or urban maloya, where they fused ragga with hip-hop, but nevertheless maintained their traditional instruments. They then renamed their group El Diablo.

They began with folk songs played with a touch of Mayola (a form of traditional ancestral, cultic music in the Reunion Island). Later, they fused reggae, ragga and rap into their music and produced a new album, Zinzin, with 11 tracks all composed and written by Payet.

El Diablo has succeeded in conquering the international scene.

Between 1999 and 2001, they participated in such prestigious festivals as the Musicales de Bastia and the Inter-cultural festival of Mayotte.

Tickets for the concert at Club Obligatto cost shs10,000. While the Kakyeka show will be free.
