DRIVERS have welcomed an innovation by MOSAC that will see them run their entire rally on closed roads at Akright Housing estates on Entebbe road. Many drivers feel it will reduce the cost of rallying.

The 120km MOSAC rally due March 27-28 will be run on special stage format on Taiba hill, 22-km along Kampala-Entebbe road.

“It is a great idea. It is safe, interesting and cost effective. My costs will go down by more than 50 percent,” Caltex Rally Team’s Kuku Ranjit said yesterday.

“With the roads closed to public traffic, we will take blind corners without any fear,” Kuku threatened.

Dipu Ruparelia, who has missed the first two events of the season, is considering competing in the rally.

“It is a good decision. It’s very cheap for drivers, organisers and even the fans,” Dipu said.

However, Arthur Blick, who has been out of action for lack of sponsorship had mixed feelings.

“It will reduce costs and we will go flat out even in blind corners, but going through the same stages is less challenging and exciting.

Drivers prefer different obstacles,” Blick said.

Fast rising Omar Mayanja was cautious: “I would like to see the route first. If they maximise challenges and minimise traffic, then it is good.”
