KENYA has deployed the dreaded General Service Unit on the border with Uganda in Mt. Elgon district following the death of five people in renewed land clashes.

Authorities in Kenya said the perpetrators of the clashes had escaped to Uganda.

Kenya’s Western Provincial Commissioner Hassan Noor Hassan said he had appealed to Uganda to help track them down and hand them over.

But both the Police and the Army in Uganda said they had not received the request.

Police spokesman Asuman Mugenyi said they were willing to cooperate and get rid of lawlessness on the common border.

“We wouldn’t want our side of the border to be a den of criminals,” Mugenyi said. He said the Kapchorwa Police commander will go to the border to cross check.

The army spokesman, Shaban Bantariza, said they had not received any communication.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s Mt Elgon MP John Serut has opposed the deployment, saying the situation does not warrant it.

Serut said the officers were instead harassing communities living along the border.
