ABOUT sixty UPDF soldiers entrusted with guarding Kabaka Ronald Mutebi (above) have not been paid since they were passed out in October 2003 at Kaweweta in Luweero district, reports Josephine Maseruka.
Sources close to the Kabaka regretted the state of affairs of the UPDF soldiers saying they even lacked weapons, uniforms and shoes.
Sources also expressed concern over entrusting the Kabaka with ill-equipped soldiers who were not remunerated which, “has not only inconvenienced the Kabaka but had also made him very uncomfortable because the soldiers had families to cater for.â€
UPDF spokesman Major Shaban Bantariza yesterday refuted claims that the soldiers attached to traditional institutions had not been paid for one and a half years.
“The traditional institutions identified the people and we trained them until October last year. How can you then claim that they had not been paid for so such a long time?†Bantariza asked.
He said that only the passed out soldiers were entitled to salaries. Ends
