GUNFIRE rocked Bwera subcounty on Monday night as intelligence operatives ambushed seven rebel Allied Democratic Front (ADF) rebels, killing their commander and another rebel.

A St Mary primary school Kyabalokya pupil, Wilson Masereka, was injured in the left arm by a stray bullet, 300 metres from the scene of the ambush
A third rebel, Asuman Abacha, from Iganga was wounded, captured and admitted to Bwera hospital. He said the rebels were on a food-gathering mission when they were attacked.

A civilian rebel collaborator, Musubaho, the commander’s brother, was also netted in the ambush as he allegedly tried to hand the rebels foodstuffs.

Asuman Abacha identified the dead commander as Santana Bairinga from Kirembo Kisinga subcounty, Kasese district and the other as Bashir Wandera from Bugiri.

The operation took place at 10:00pm and was commanded by the 99th battalion chief Major Bob Wasswa and conducted by Kasese DISO, Moses Tumwebaze and the Rwenzori Mountains Alpine Brigade Intelligence Officer, Lt Paul Muwonge.

Three AK47 rifles, two magazines one of them empty and 90 bullets were recovered.

The incident comes hardly three weeks after state security minister Betty Aketch visited Kyabolokya, Rusese parish, Bwera.

The ambush took place about 300 metres from former Rwenzori Mountains Alpine Brigade commander, Lt. Col Mawa Muhindo’s residence.

Mawa said he had received information that the rebels had been asking about the status of security of his residence.

He said he was happy about Bairinga’s death, describing him as a brutal rebel who had survived 28 UPDF ambushes and killed dozens of soldiers while the army was fighting in the DRC.

The village is about five kilometres inside Uganda from the Uganda-Congo border.
