UGANDA’S state minister for industry Jennifer Namuyangu has a written to Kenya’s trade minister about delays caused by double inspection and scrutiny of Ugandan exports to his country.

The letter follows a complaint raised by WISPRO Uganda Limited, a local manufacturer of cosmetics that COTECNA, a Kenyan inspection body was causing delays which led to losses.

The minister said according to WISPRO, 25 samples are always taken from each export product despite clearance from the Uganda National Bureau of Standards.

“I want to know from the Kenyan minister of trade why our exports to Kenya are subjected to scrutiny and double-checking. Kenya should not have another inspection body when we already have our own mandated by law,” she said.

“Kenya is acting unfairly to our exports because we don’t do that to theirs. Once quality marks are placed on any product, all importing governments should respect them,” Namuyangu said.

Namuyangu said according to the East African Community, member counteries are supposed to respect each others’ bureau. She said exports are supposed to be verified once.
