Basketball fans will have to wait a little longer before they witness what the new 2004 season has to offer this time round.
The MTN-sponsored league, which was supposed to start this weekend, will now kick off on the first weekend of April as confirmed by Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) general secretary, Peninah Kabenge.
“The official sponsors (MTN) have not yet announced their sponsorship package as well as releasing the official league kits for the various teams,” Kabenge said.
“Consequently we have had to freeze the start of the league,” she said.
In addition, FUBA technical committee chairman Yunus Nkutu revealed that majority of teams had not yet registered for the league that made it hard to draw up the fixtures.
Players will thus have the opportunity to show off their skills in a warm-up tournament preceding the MTN Basketball league in Kampala.
As in 2003, the warm-up tournament, Makerere Open will be held on March 27-28 at the Makerere swimming pool court.
This event will be crucial in the clubs’ preparations for the season as most teams use this event to gauge their strength before the league.
For most clubs, this will be a good wake up call to get their acts into gear if they want to have a competitive edge.
Meanwhile, Falcons, Charging Rhinos, Makerere University Sparks and LadyBucks are already undergoing intensive training in preparation for the East, Central and Southern Africa tournament due April 19-25.
