THE Uganda land commission has permitted Jinja district authorities to utilise the land at Itanda near Bujagali falls.

The district chairman, Fred Gume, told residents of Butagaya sub-county on Tuesday that he had secured the land title from the commission allowing individual developers to use the land.

The district council in 2002 had allowed a Kampala businessman, Sudhir Ruparelia, to develop the land into a tourist centre.

However, work at the site failed to take off following complaints that the land was a shooting range.

Gume said Ruparelia plans to build a hotel and other tourist facilities which would attract tourists to Jinja and raise revenue for the district.

The resident district commissioner, Mugisha Muhwezi, urged residents to concentrate on growing high income-generating crops such as vanilla and moringa instead of traditional ones.
