ONCE again, Makerere University academic staff are threatening to lay down their pens if the university does not oblige to their demands for a more than double salary increment.

In a resolution made during the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) meeting on March 5, the lecturers expressed bitterness that they were paid far less than those paid by the Public Service.
“We have given the University Council two weeks to respond, then we get back to the General Assembly to decide the next step,” Dr. Ezra Mishambi Twesigomwe, the MUASA chairman and deputy dean of the faculty of science said on Thursday.

A cross section of senior lecturers said this week that their work morale is very low, and if the University does not increase their emoluments latest by July 1, 2004 they would go on strike.
“We are extremely dissatisfied and may soon decide to strike if negotiations fail,” Twesigomwe said.
