SIR— I commend the Libyan government for dropping nuclear weapons ambitions.
Such weapons are meant for massive, non-discriminatory destruction of man and environment with far long lasting negative consequences.
However, it will always be very tempting for nuclear free countries to acquire them for the very reasons that those who have them keep them.
The only sure deterrent for a nuclear war is dismantling all nuclear weaponry from the face of the world and United Nations should take initiative to that effect.
